Abstract

Several parameters of thyroid function were studied in mentally retarded children with and without Down's syndrome. Both groups had normal protein-bound iodine and thyroidal radioiodine uptake. However, the erythrocyte T 3 -I 131 -uptake was elevated in children with mongolism. A high proportion of them had circulating thyroid antibodies. Bone age was retarded in children under 10 years. The mechanism and significance of these anomalies have been discussed.
