Abstract

Twenty-four pregnant women had a marked decrease in serum BEI (butanolextractable iodine) following a sudden weight gain or during an acute upper respiratory infection. A single low BEI obtained at such a time or during temporary hospitalization is not per se an indication for thyroid therapy without confirmation of another serum BEI in the absence of weight gain or an acute infection.
