Abstract

The problem was whether abnormal thyroid function plays a role in the high incidence of reproductive failures of women at extremes of the childbearing age. No norms appeared to be available for serum PBI (protein-bound iodine) or BEI (butanol-extractable iodine) of such women. A total of 687 BEI values were determined serially on serum during 94 normal pregnancies of girls aged 14 through 17 and 52 normal pregnancies of women aged 35 through 44 years. In comparison with values of women aged 18 to 34, older women had suggestively lower and the 14-year-old girls significantly higher BEI values. For girls aged 15 to 17, the elevation tended to decrease with each year of age.
