Abstract

Migration and organogenesis of the embryonic thyroid gland is dependent on transcription factors regulating expression of target genes involved in its differentiation and function. Thyroid transcription factor 2 (TTF-2), first cloned in the rat, contains a central forkhead domain and regulates both thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase gene transcription (1). Independently, the FOXE1 gene (formerly FKHL15), which also contains a central forkhead domain, was identified in humans (2). We observed that the predicted amino acid sequence of FOXE1 was very similar to rodent Ttf-2, suggesting that this protein is its human homologue.
