Abstract

A series resonant <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">L-C</tex> circuit connected in series with the SCR provides a simple and reliable means of commutating the thyristor in a dc-dc chopper. By having the load connected in parallel with the resonant circuit and a diode shunting the capacitor, a Fixed SCR commutating voltage is maintained over a wide range of loads. An experimental model circuit was successfully operated with <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">L-R</tex> , dc motor, and battery loads. In addition, the actual observed waveforms correspond closely with waveforms plotted with a digital computer simulation of the circuit.
