Abstract
Levels of Facteur thymique serique, mitogenic response of lymphocytes to optimal concentration of phytohemagglutinin and number of antibody producing splenocytes to sheep red blood cells were estimated in animals fed ad libitum, copper deficient and pair-fed control rats. Reduced activity of thymic factor was observed both in copper deficient and pair-fed controls, particularly the former, as compared to the ad libitum-fed group. Significantly, five of eight animals in the copper-deficient group had no detectable thymic factor activity. Mitogenic response of lymphocytes was comparable in the three groups. There was a significant reduction in the number of plaque forming splenocytes to sheep red blood cells in copper deficient animals compared to both pairfed and ad libitum fed controls. The biological significance of the effects of copper deficient and sufficient microenvironment on cell-mediated and humoral immunity and susceptibility to infections is discussed.
