Abstract

Next Generation Wireless Network (NGWN) is expected to integrate various Radio Access Technologies (RATs), and to support heterogeneous services with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. However, these desired functions demand seamless coordination and efficient resource management of the heterogeneous RATs. In this paper, an integrated system of UMTS and WLAN which supports throughput-sensitive, delay-sensitive and Bit Error Rate (BER)-sensitive users is considered and a joint power and bandwidth allocation algorithm for uplink transmission is proposed. Through examining throughput performance of users with various user services, the optimization problem is formulated as maximizing user overall throughput for both access networks subject to QoS constraints. Solving the optimization problem by use of Genetic Algorithm (GA), the optimal power and bandwidth allocation strategy can be obtained. The numerical simulation demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
