Abstract

The spatial variation of throughfall volume and chemical concentrations is illustrated in three Danish Sitka spruce stands of identical age. In addition, quantifying methods are compared after applying 30 and 7 samples to the calculation of the mean plot. Volumes and concentrations depend very strongly on distances to the nearest trees. The best correlations are found through power regressional techniques. The mean throughfall volume is positively correlated (0.84?0.69) while chemical concentrations are negatively correlated (‐0.92 ? ‐0.33) with stem distance. The mean plot is calculated as arithmetically and volumetrically weighted mean values. By an alternative method the functional expression of the stem distance regressions is combined with an integration in relation to calculated mean crown projections. The large variations cause lot averages to differ significantly by a single plot. The sample reduction outweights the alternative method by only 1%, while the weighted and arithmetic mean values are o...
