Abstract

Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass are iconic children’s classics both based on the extraordinary dreams of a young girl. Like the Alice stories, many fairy or children’s tales have an element of the strange or unbelievable about them and so it has seemed living through the years since the United Kingdom’s fateful referendum on whether to remain in or leave the European Union held in June 2016. The whole episode has been filled with literally ‘unbelievable’ moments, events and statements that few of us ever thought to experience or hear in what we had thought was a well-established democracy with an open, global and cosmopolitan society.
