Abstract

A concept of culture embracing the learner's wider world is related to an extended notion of teaching. Enculturation as transaction is then introduced to illuminate this extended notion of teaching as a form of cultural activity. Use is then made of a range of Bakhtin's concepts to show how this notion of teaching could be opened up for analysis in ways similar to how Bakhtin approaches writing, that is as a cultural activity. A model of Bakhtin's approach is developed from this and described as, Bakhtin's Window. Finally it is suggested how a more integrated approach to explicating teaching as a cultural activity then becomes possible through using this model.
