Abstract

Taking students out of the classroom has its challenges, but it can also have unexpected benefits. In meeting with gifted students only four times a year, an enrichment program teacher facilitated students in the selection of six silos in an abandoned flour mill for an urban renewal project. What began as a study in Sudbury, Ontario, resulted in gifted students being introduced to local history, civic politics, cultural diversity, public speaking, economics, and community enhancement.
