The social work profession recognises the importance and relevance of the Senate Standing Committee on Health and Welfare taking action to describe the current issues relevant to welfare programme planning, research implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The reviewers share some of the Baume committee's concerns about the state of the art of research in Australia currently, but it is also concerned about some of the conclusions reached by the committee, and find it necessary to provide some commentary.
