Abstract

Two patients with acute anuric renal failure, thrombocytopenia and “microangiopathic” hemolytic anemia are reported. Renal biopsy showed a lesion consistent with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Dialysis was performed for several weeks but no return of renal function occurred. Treatment with large amounts of prednisone was ineffective in reversing the renal failure. In one patient the illness appeared to have been precipitated by phenylbutazone.
