Abstract

Summary 1. Three cases of thrombosis of the renal vein with infarction of the kidney in newborn infants as a complication of diarrhea are presented. 2. This is not an uncommon autopsy finding, and should be suspected clinically when dehydration, shock, hematuria, or anuria, and a tender mass in one or both flanks are associated with diarrhea in the neonatal period. 3. The condition is rapidly fatal. Prompt surgical intervention and post-operative anticoagulant therapy is at present the treatment of choice.
