Abstract

The incidence of thrombophlebitis occurring in women on the pill and those not on the pill is discussed. The accurracy of the findings of the Medical Research Council that women taking the pill or either pregnant or puerperal women were 3 and 6 times more likely than nonpregnant nonpill-takers to develop phlebitis are questioned. In the authors opinion there is a doubtful specific chemical connection between the 2 but rather a more logical mechanical connection which occurs secondary to the symptoms of edema tiredness and troublesome varicose veins which occur with the pill especially those with high estrogen content. The need to include the findings of prior varicose veins in women in all clinical studies is stressed.
