Abstract

The successful application of thrombolytic therapy to the treatment of acute myocardial infarction has stimulated similar attempts to apply thrombolytic therapy to the treatment of acute pulmonary embolism. The development of newer thrombolytic agents and improved protocols for dosing and delivering thrombolytic therapy have provided additional insight into the risks and potential benefits of thrombolysis for acute pulmonary embolism. The purpose of the present review is to examine the risks and benefits of thrombolytic therapy for pulmonary embolism in light of recent investigations.
