Abstract

Valproate, carbamazapine, and other mood stabilizers have been found to increase the risk of thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, and/or anemia. However most previous studies have been small, were cross-sectional, included mostly adults, and did not use non-psychiatric controls. Our aims were to ascertain 1) whether geriatric psychiatry patients are at increased risk for these hematological conditions and 2) whether exposure to mood stabilizers and other clinical factors increase hematological adverse events in geriatric psychiatry patients.
