Abstract
A rare form of thrombocytopenia is that associated with hemangioma in the intestinal tract. Although only 18 cases have been reported in the literature, the incidence is probably more common. Unless this association is suspected, the opportunity for cure by surgery, as in the present case, may be lost. In addition to thrombocytopenia the presence of an intestinal hemangioma may be revealed by melena, gross hemorrhage or other gastrointestinal symptoms. The previous case reports are summarized and the differential diagnosis is discussed. In all similar cases reported in the literature, the thrombocytopenia has been cured after surgical removal of the hemangioma or its treatment by irradiation.
