Abstract

A resilient identity can buffer against the harmful effects of living in contexts of adversity. This study explored the identity resilience experiences of South African adolescents living in under-resourced communities. Focus group discussions with fifty-four participants (MAge=17.85) were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants emphasized the centrality of their sense of self as they navigate through life’s challenges. Personal agency and a resilient mindset played an important role in overcoming adversity. Participants found strength in healthy connections (with families, schools, and religious communities). Interventions to enhance the well-being of adolescents in under-resourced communities should consider personal resources and social structures.
