Abstract

The population of NaI 3p and 4d terms after grazing scattering of fast Na + ions is investigated by optical spectrometry. We observe a threshold in population for the 4d term with respect to projectile energy (velocity) which results in a selective excitation of the 3p term at low energies. The data are interpreted in terms of a model of population via resonant charge exchange at the surface which incorporates the effects of the projectile velocity.
