Abstract

Software-defined hybrid passive optical network (HPON) is an intelligent architecture and can implement the coexistence of multiple PON systems using various physical layer (PHY) multiplexing technologies. By introducing the concept of virtual PON (VPON), a three-stage dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm based on fairness for original and new VPONs in software-defined HPON is proposed. The performance benefits of the proposed algorithm in terms of bandwidth utilization, access probability of new VPONs and fairness index are verified through network simulation.
