Abstract

All Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists trainees commencing training after December 1992 have been required to sit the General Medical Examination (GME) as part of the examination process leading to Fellowship. The examination is taken after 24 months of accredited training and is usually sat in f the third year. The examination has replaced the Medicine in Relation to Psychiatry examination which had been part of the Section I examination in the fourth year of training. In the GME the candidate is allowed an hour with a medical patient and, after 15 minutes to gather his or her thoughts, has a thirty minute viva conducted by a physician together with a psychiatrist. After presenting the findings, the candidate is taken to the patient to demonstrate some aspects of the physical findings and the viva concludes with a discussion which usually covers management and pertinent psychosocial aspects of the case.
