Abstract

Abstract The aim of the study was to develop scales for the measurement of epilepsy-related fears. A questionnaire was mailed to adult members of a local epilepsy organization for patients, which resulted in 58 reliable answers. The mean age of the sample was 39 years, with an average epilepsy duration of 21 years. The scales cover three dimensions: avoidance of stimuli thought to raise the risk of having a seizure, fear of consequences of seizures, and fear of other people's attitudes or behaviours towards the person experiencing seizures. Internal consistency and split-half reliability for the scales were found to be high.
