Abstract

The following three lectures on the Rev Dr George Young (1777-1848) were intended to be given, in 1862 to successive meetings of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society (founded 1823) by its then Curator, Martin Simpson (1800-1892). In the event only the first lecture was delivered, the mild criticisms of Dr Young voiced by Simpson on that occasion, which resulted in adverse press reports and the publication of letters of disapprobation, apparently being unacceptable to the Society's Council and Members.
