Human and societal communication needs are analyzed, and three categories of communication need are discussed: access to people, to information, and to information processing. For each category, a key application or issue that, in the authors' view, is essential for unlocking the broadband potential is suggested. The focus is on the applications of broadband networks rather than their architecture or services. >
