Abstract

Three waste heat recovery systems including one or two heat pumps have been installed and operated in three different process industries for more than one year. These include an edible oils plant, Monarch Fine Foods in Rexdale, Ontario, a milk processing plant, Agrinove in Ste. Claire, Quebec and a lead smelter, Brunswick Mining and Smelting in Beledune, New Brunswick. Two of these installations have been monitored for an extended period of time; the monitoring system for the third was just recently installed. The operating characteristics for the three systems are presented along with some of the operational difficulties. The financial details of the three cases are presented giving capital investment of the installation, the value of the heat recovered by the system and the cost of the electricity used during one year of operation.
