Abstract

Three pastoral situations – a sermon, a funeral and a wedding – illuminate how the doctrine of the incarnation might inform our response to the symbols of secular culture. In the light of these experiences challenges are posed to the academy to engage more fully with the realities of pastoral ministry in modern culture – in engaging with symbols, in relation to the time pressure of pastoral decision-making and in fuller recognition of the role of the personal faith of pastors in informing their actions as agents of God in the world. A passing note suggests that the tools we have could usefully be more fully deployed in helping the churches in their thinking about training for ministry.
