Abstract

Topical application of fluoride solutions is recommended as an integral part of a preventive dental care program in areas where the water is not fluoridated. Three simple and effective technics for applying a stannous fluoride solution have been described. Education of the patient, preparation of the teeth and fluoride solution, and the frequency of application have been discussed. Several satisfactory agents and methods of administration are available for use by the practicing dentist in a preventive dental care program. Acceptance for other technics should be delayed until an evaluation of the supporting data is made by the dentist. Active research is presently being conducted by many investigators for the purpose of providing the dental profession with more effective methods of prevention.
