Abstract

In this paper, a three-dimensional, ultra-wideband and polarization-insensitive metamaterial absorber (MA) is proposed. The absorber consists of only one substance: graphite. The simulated results show that ultra-wideband absorption of more than 90% can be achieved from 5.06 THz to 18.84 THz, with a relative bandwidth up to 115%. We investigate impedance matching, distribution of the electromagnetic field and power loss density to explain the physical mechanism of the ultra-broadband absorption. In addition, the influences of the incident angle and the polarization angle of electromagnetic waves on the absorbing effect are also studied. The results show the new absorber has excellent absorption properties for incident angles of 60° or less and is insensitive to polarization angles.
