Abstract

The oblique section 3-D image reconstruction method offers some advantages over techniques which combine multiple tilt views. A complete reconstruction, limited only by section thickness and geometry, is possible from a single image. Moreover, the reconstruction is insensitive to section thinning caused by prolonged electron irradiation, and the missing cone problem due to physical restrictions in specimen tilt is overcome. A major limitation is that sections must be thin relative to the unit cell dimension running approximately normal to the section plane.
