Abstract

In this paper, an interface-coupled method is introduced in the mesh densification in three-dimensional finite element method. The different densities of element mesh are always used in computation in order to get a high accuracy of the result, and this always leads to an interface-coupled problem between fine meshand coarse mesh. According to the least potential energy method, the stiffness of the interface between two kinds of meshes is coupled into the whole stiffness matrix. Then the continuity of the displacements at every point in the interface can be gained. By this means, to change the density of the FEM mesh from a coarse mesh to a fine mesh is easily to be achieved. So that the pre-processing work of FEM can be much simplified. This method can be used to densify the mesh of a local area and to trace the cracking in it. In the paper, basic theories and three numerical examples are presented.
