Abstract

After fourteen years of work, in 1983 Anthony C. Yu published the fourth and last volume of The Journey to the West ðhereafter JWÞ to complete his English translation of the great classic Chinese novel, Xiyouji 西遊記 ðhereafter XYJÞ. Over the thirty or so years since then, Yu continued his work on XYJ, studying it, revising his translation, and putting out an abridged version of the novel, The Monkey and the Monk: An Abridgment of “The Journey to the West” ðChicago: University of Chicago Press, 2006Þ. After some six years of sustained labor, the revised, four-volume edition of The Journey to the West was published in 2012. This magnificent work presents readers with one of the greatest translations of world literature. It merits acclaim and deserves a full assessment of Yu’s achievements.
