Abstract

In the view of the prophets and their allies social injustice was both sinful and avoidable. How simple and obvious was the solution. There need be no national doom, there need be no poverty, if only people behaved correctly: “There shall be no needy among you—since the Lord your God will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as a hereditary portion—if only you heed the Lord your God and take care to keep all this Instruction that I enjoin upon you this day … You will dominate many nations, but they will not dominate you” (Deut. 15:4–6). But the people were “dull” and “foolish” and, could not seem to grasp “all this Instruction.” Indeed, they were incapable of understanding even the one sentence instruction that covered them all: “Righteousness and only righteousness you shall pursue.”! (Deut. 16:20).
