Abstract

Th e present essay is part of a collection of works which selected key themes related to the British Atlantic history and its development throughout three centuries. David Armitage defi nes a general framework for Atlantic history as a historical fi eld, its possible temporal frames and the development of investigations using the Atlantic approach. Armitage pusher further and proposes three diff erent spatial and temporal concepts: Cis-Atlantic history, Circum-Atlantic history and Trans-Atlantic history. It is, therefore, an essential work for the understanding of American colonial history, as it allows the investigator to broadly perceive the fl uidity and movement of people, goods and ideas in the modern world.
