Abstract

A radiometer has been developed for the radiometric measurement of rocket exhaust plumes in a space environment. The radiometer was installed in an instrumented probe which was ejected from the Atlas booster rocket at altitudes above 300,000 ft. A spinning action imparted to the probe caused the radiometer to generate a rough thermal map of the exhaust plume as it fell behind the rocket. The radiometer was sensitive in the 0·25–4·5-μ region and had a dynamic range of 10 5. A sophisticated internal calibration system and a rugged component package was dictated by the nature of the experiment.
