Abstract

Unexpectedly large cross sections have been observed for the collision-induced excitation of H/sub 3//sup +/ with subsequent decay to the three-particle state H/sup +/+H/sup -/+H/sup +/. The differential (in laboratory-angle) cross sections for H/sup -/ were found to be comparable to that for the final-state formation of H/sub 2//sup +/+H(2p), as determined by a separate coincidence experiment, indicating a strong ionic component to the excited-state wave function.
