Abstract

IN a previous communication1 I directed attention to the complexity of the ‘lutoids’ separated from fresh latex by high-speed centrifuging. I have now made further studies of fresh latex using phase microscopy. As reported in the literature2–4, aggregates of lutoids occur in untreated fresh latex; I now find these aggregates not only contain lutoids, but also Frey Wyssling5 particles and pear-shaped rubber particles, all of which occur in a gelatinous matrix. Associated with this gelatinous material, I have observed many very fine threads which often trail from the edges of the aggregates. These are quite distinct from the chains of coagulated rubber which have been reported in latex under certain conditions. Since the particles differ in density, the effect of high-speed centrifuging on the aggregates will be disruptive.
