Abstract

This descriptive study was conducted to determine thoughts and expectations of students' through their professions and education. Study sample consisted of 458 nursing students of Health Science Faculty in Gaziantep University. The questionnaire was administered to students who agreed to take part in the study and attended the classes at the time when the study was performed. Data were collected between 24 March-19 April 2014, using a questionnaire which was prepared by searching through the literature. The data obtained was electronically evaluated using frequencies and percentages. According to results of the study; 52% of students preferred nursing because of high possibility of finding a job, 52.2% of students was moderately appreciate to study nursing, and 58.0% of students think nurses are effective members of health care team. In addition, 32.3% of students stated they want to work as a nurse after their graduation. Furthermore, 44.1% of students were worrying about the future of their professions. Students also mentioned about crowded classrooms, insufficient physical conditions of education and low number of instructors. Furthermore, students expressed the expectation of increased standards of their profession and demanded that nursing should be seen as a professional job.
