Abstract

In 1925, representatives from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) met with members of the National Board of Medical Examiners to discuss whether specialty certification was needed in thoracic surgery. The conclusion at that time was that there was no need for specialty thoracic surgery certification.
