Abstract

Approximately 15% to 20% of the population of Europe, 40% of the U.S. population, and up to 80% of some Native American and Pacific Islander populations [1] are morbidly obese, which is defined as a body mass index (BMI)>39 kg/m2. Adjustable gastric banding is the most common procedure in Europe for the treatment of morbid obesity. In laparoscopic gastric banding, a ring is placed over the gastric cardia to limit food intake.
