Abstract

A 70-year-old man with a history of cryptogenic cirrhosis and ascites had an unexplained right-sided pleural effusion. A peritoneal leak study was requested to determine whether the effusion was a direct result of a peritoneal-pleural communication. Imaging showed no communication with the pleural space, although multiple foci of activity within the mediastinum and left axilla were evident. These indicate lymph nodes along the course of the thoracic duct, with communication extending to the left axilla, and they were thought to represent normal physiologic uptake.
