Abstract
Renal ectopia is common, and the majority of ectopic kidneys lie inferior to the normal position. Thoracic (or superior ectopic) kidneys are rare and usually asymptomatic. We report a case of a thoracic kidney with magnetic resonance angiographic demonstration of its unusually long vascular pedicle. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old man complained of chest tightness and mild dyspnea after exercising. History included successful left diaphragmatic hernia repair, which was performed when the patient was an infant. Physical examination revealed a left thoracotomy scar. Chest radiography showed a rounded opacity superimposed on the cardiac silhouette (fig. 1). Computerized tomography demonstrated this opacity to be a thoracic ectopic kidney. Magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated a long left renal artery originating at the normal level (fig. 2). No functional abnormality was seen on excretory urography and the left renal parenchyma appeared normal. The mild respiratory symptoms improved spontaneously. The patient was informed of the benign prognosis of a thoracic ectopic kidney. DISCUSSION
