Abstract

This paper deals with the anonymous donations made to the library of the University of Leiden by the well-known English republican and bibliophile Thomas Hollis. The presents arrived at Leiden through an intermediary, Hollis's friend Rodolphe de Vautravers, who had been instrumental in forwarding books and other gifts to the Burgerbibliothek, Bern. The Leiden Hollisiana consist of eleven silver medals, thirteen wax portraits of British authors, twelve prints after works of art in Hollis's collection, and nine books. These are all lavishly bound and gilt-tooled with emblems of liberty, initially by Richard Montagu and later by John Matthewman, his apprentice.
