Abstract
Abstract Building upon recent findings regarding the copying of early manuscripts of the Canterbury Tales and the identity of their scribes, this article revisits the question of who was responsible for commissioning and overseeing the production of the Hengwrt and Ellesmere manuscripts. Detailed analysis of the additions and corrections made to the Hengwrt manuscript, as well as the editorial interventions that lie behind the copy of the Canterbury Tales found in Ellesmere, leads to the suggestion that the supervisor responsible for the production of both manuscripts was Thomas Hoccleve.
