Abstract

Abstract English philosopher, generally regarded as the founder of English moral and political philosophy. His most famous work is Leviathan (English edition 165r; Latin edition r668), but he published translations of Thucydides (1628) and Homer (1674–6) as well as a philosophical trilogy in Latin-De Corpore (1655), De Cive (1642; English translation, 1651). And De Homine (1658) covering logic, language, optics, human nature, law, and religion, as well as moral and political theory.
