Abstract

The figure on the cover shows histological specimens from iris and ciliary body, indicating aquaporins. This is described in the paper by Tran et al. in this issue of ACTA. Koop et al. in the Netherlands review multifocal chorioretinitis, which is frequently related to sarcoidosis and has rather poor visual outcome. Kringelholt et al. in Aarhus describe biphasic effects of prostaglandins on ciliary vasculature. Renard et al. in France suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be protective in glaucoma, and smoking is harmful. Pinto et al. in Portugal and Belgium found reduced retinal blood flow velocity in patients with glaucoma and lack of venous pulsation. Wang et al. in China and Germany examined patients with intracranial tumours and found parapapillary atrophy and optic nerve changes that resemble glaucoma damage. Lala et al. in Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina report 8 ETRDS letter improvement in patients with AMD treated with ranibizumab on a PRN protocol. Loukovaara et al. in Finland found increased levels of angiopoietin-2 in diabetic eyes as well as several other growth factors, VEGF, EPO, MMp-9 and TGFβ1. Finger et al. studied 3470 patients with AMD in 274 centres in Germany. They received 4.4 ranibizumab injections per year resulting in stabilization of vision. Four per cent had serious side effects. Forsaa et al. in Norway suggest that strict face-down positioning is not necessary in macular hole repair. Goto et al. in Japan found reduced success rate in eyes with inferior retinal breaks, when using vitrectomy and gas to repair rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Tran et al. in Denmark locate aquaporins 6-12 in various ocular tissues and suggest that these may be important for transport of water, lactate, glycerol in various tissues including retina. Olsson et al. in Sweden propose a new ocular motor function test, which may be useful for screening in children. Linke et al. in Germany trace the outcome of almost 11 000 donor corneas over 30 years. Grzybowski et al. in Poland review the influence on Ludwik Fleck in ophthalmology. Mathysen et al. in Belgium, UK, France, the Netherlands and Slovenia discuss the European Board of Ophthalmology and its diploma examination. available at www.actaophthalmologica.com: Yamamoto et al. in Japan report significant visual loss in patients with infected trabeculectomy blebs. Bu et al. in China suggest that insulin-like growth factor-1 is influential in apoptosis and repair following optic nerve injury. Magalhaes et al. in Brazil found keratoprosthesis to be useful in ocular burns. Aragone et al. in Italy recommend amino acid-enriched tear drops for dry eye. Meuleners et al. in Australia report improved mental health following cataract surgery. Rejdak et al. in Germany and Poland suggest that l-kynurenine aminotransferases are involved in cataract formation. Lushchyk et al. in the Netherlands randomized patients with AMD to bevacizumab injections every 4 versus 6–8 weeks and found similar outcomes. Lott et al. USA found retinal vessel reactivity to be impaired in prediabetic patients, in parallel with reduced insulin sensitivity. Zehetner et al. in Austria found increased VEGF plasma level in diabetic with poor glycaemic control. Kawamura et al. in Japan use ICG angiography to suggest 2 types on polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. Seidel et al. in Austria combine verteporfin and ranibizumab for retinal angiomatous proliferation and report 9 ETDRS letter improvement in vision at 1 year. El-Asrar et al. in Saudi Arabia recommend immunomodulary therapy in VKH disease. Menabuoni et al. in Italy recommend the ‘anvil’ profile in laser-assisted penetrating keratoplasty. Handa et al. in Japan propose a new visual acuity test for children. Stewart et al. in USA study investment in ophthalmic drug development. Trinh et al. in France describe a new technique for laser-assisted endothelial keratoplasty. You et al. in China and Germany found retinitis pigmentosa in 1:4000 Chinese. Ogata-Iwao et al. in Japan found less successful IOP control following phacotrabeculectomy compared with simple trabeculectomy. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Acta and look forward to seeing you at the EVER meeting in Nice.
