Abstract

Aroot and branch' review of the Mental Health Act has been promised by health secretary Frank Dobson as part of an overhaul of mental health provision. Mr Dobson outlined a 'third way' for services, which he said would yield better care for patients and their relatives. Mr Dobson's raft of changes included the creation of a 24-hour crisis helpline, more 24-hour crisis teams to respond to people's emergency needs, an increase in acute mental health beds and more hostels and support accommodation. 'Care in the community has failed. Discharging people from institutions has brought benefits to some. But it has left many vulnerable patients trying to cope on their own. Others have been left to become a danger to themselves and a nuisance to others,' Mr Dobson said.
