Abstract

The development of a vision for third-generation (3G) wireless technology and its support for multimedia services, global roaming, operation in multiple fixed and mobile environments, and high-speed data services is of prime importance to commercial wireless network operators of the world. This paper describes some of the standards activities that have taken place to realize this vision. Particular attention is given to cdma2000∗ and wideband CDMA radio transmission technologies that evolved from the cdmaOne∗-based system. These technologies provide a true multimedia system that offers improved capacity for both voice and non-voice applications and accessibility to intranet and Internet applications at high data rates. While meeting the requirements of a 3G wireless system, the cdma2000 system maintains backward compatibility with currently deployed cdmaOne networks worldwide, providing a smooth migration path from second generation (2G) to 3G wireless systems.
