Abstract
Thioketones have been shown to be likely intermediates in the reduction of ketones and aldehydes to thiols by hydrogen sulfide ions, a reaction which plays an important role in the natural sulfurization of organic matter in sediments. The reduction proceeds by a thiophilic addition of HS − on the thioketone most likely via a single electron transfer mechanism.
