Abstract

Thiocyanate was given to 26 patients with hypertension. The dosage was controlled by blood thiocyanate determinations according to the principle of Barker. No fatalities and no major complications occurred. Of the 16 patients adequately treated and controlled, 10 had a good result: i.e., systolic blood pressure fell to 170 or lower, with a corresponding fall in diastolic pressure, and there was subjective improvement. Dosage varied from 0.3 to 1.0 gm. a day. The blood thiocyanate level varied from 8 to 13 mg., though 10 mg. was the level desired. A micromodification of Barker's blood thiocyanate method was devised using standards of ink which seem to be relatively permanent. This method utilizes blood from finger puncture rather than venipuncture and is sufficiently accurate for clinical requirements.
